We’re back after a long absence from the netwaves.  For many, December is the heigth of the Holidays.  For us, it means the movie awards season is just getting underway.  This year’s proceedings are being thrown into question by the writer’s strike (could they really not have an Oscars show?  The thought is just too terrible to contemplate). The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which announced the Golden Globe nominations today, is proceeding under the hope that the stike will be resolved by the time the Globes airs on January 13, 2008.  There were no  major surprises (see a full list of nominations here).  As I see it, the noms have helped define the frontrunners.  Here is my kist of the Top 10 conteners for Best Pic (my pics for the other categories will follow in the coming days). BEST PICTURE FRONTRUNNERS
(As of December 13, 2007)

1. No Country For Old Men
The latest effort from master filmmakers Joel & Ethan Coen was named “Best Picture” by both the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle  this week Together with it’s four Golden Globe noms (including Best Pic),  the buzz on this movie is hot right now.
2. Atonement
The critical praise for this movie is tremendous.  It doesn’t hurt that it’s a romantic drama with two beautiful stars.
3. American Gangster
Not as critcally acclaimed as the my #1 or #2 picks, it did well at the box office (we must never forget the popular vote).  Plus, any movie with Denzel is worth consideration.
4. Michael Clayton
Great reviews, George Clooney and four Golden Globe noms are elevating this movie as a real Oscar contender.

5. There Will Be Blood
I have a sneaky suspicion this Paul Thomas Anderson film may blow my mind.  We’ll have to see.  The Los Angeles Film Critics Association shat itself over it.  It swept the group’s top three awards: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (for Daniel Day-Lewis.

6. Sweeney Todd
7. Juno
8. Away From Her
9. I’m Not There
10. Hairspray

SasQ ’07

We attended SasQ ’07. It was our first one, although we’ve been to the Gorge Ampitheater a couple times before. We were there Saturday and it was great. The weather wasn’t too warm or too cold and the music was amazing. The highlight was Arcade Fire.  They know how to put on a show.  Bjork was amazing.  So were Neko Case, The Beastie Boys, and Ghostland Observatory.

Space Needle

Hello, this is my first post.  Welcome to Chuchacho.  I am your host, Chuchacho.  Please, make yourself at home.  I’ll be right out with some more posts.  In the meantime, enjoy the lovely picture of the Space Needle, symbol of the city I live in: Seattle.  I invite you to read about Seattle’s buildings (or its outline [skyline!], to be more precise) from this week’s edition of The Stranger, the ‘cooler’ and ‘hipper’ of the two local weeklies.  We’ll discuss after.  I be right back.
